The free to roam phone giants are responding to United States cell phone user's growing interest in securing content from sources other than their Nextel.

"Now we can personalize their cell phone with Ringtones. No one has to settle for all that bland (stuff), you can have real music instead," supposedly says an education consumer, whose wireless currently rings a slice of the theme to a hit TV show..

Some phones, so the rumor mill has it, already have MP3 players so people can take a portion of their music collection with them. Nextel did not start with Ringtones. Even so, Subscribers will be able to synch their cells with their PCs and fill up, or "pre load," the phones with Ringtones.

For many, working for the mobile phone giants now days is almost all play and no work.. An unnamed employee of Nextel lives his days downloading the Ringtones onto a wireless before the Ringtones become available to the general public. He makes sure the clips play right, sound right, and won't malfunction if there's an incoming call.

For the established groups that have been around for a while consumers and program and hardware manufacturing providers this creates a whole new world of challenges and opportunities.. For consumers, Ringtones mean increadbly exciting new and untested possibilitese and personalize their Nextel and the continued development of their Nextel as more than Ringtones.
